Fire Management on Central Cape York Peninsula (PDF)
This booklet, produced by Tropical Savannas CRC for Cape York Peninsula Landcare, explores fire management issues in central Cape York Peninsula. It describes the main country types and their grazing and wildlife values, as well as optimum fire management for maintaining them. It uses the make believe property, Pretend Plains, to demonstrate best practice fire management for cattle grazing, taking conservation into account, and provides a calendar for planning fire activities.[pdf 1.2 Mb]
Healthy Country Indicator Species
This field guide, produced by Tropical Savannas CRC and Cape York Peninsula Landcare is an extension from the fire program and the $avanna Plan or Grazing Land Management Plan. The plant and animal species on Cape York Peninsula can show whether the country is healthy for wildlife and being managed sustainably. We place particular value on some of these species because they are rare or threatened in Queensland, Australia or worldwide, or are only found on the peninsula. Others are important because their presence shows that the special needs they share with a wide range of other species are being met. You will find profiles of 21 Healthy Country Indicator Species for Cape York Peninsula in this guide, along with information on where they live, the habitat features they need, why they are important as indicators, and on how to manage your country well for them. These guidelines contain a range of management actions because a diverse range of habitats is needed to support the diversity of wildlife that is found on the peninsula.
